Genki Girl Power Classes: Ages 8-10 (reservation)

Girls are Smart! Creative! Strong! and Powerful!

Girls get told early that they should be quiet and that it's more important to be thin and pretty rather than strong. GENKI GIRL POWER classes encourage girls to use their bodies as well as their voice to express themselves while encouraging others to do the same.

Join other like minded girls and develop your confidence, creativity, and strength in a warm, welcoming, supportive environment.

Using hands-on experiential team building exercises and the art of Japanese taiko drumming, we will:

-- learn the history of this dynamic art form,
-- push ourselves physically, with conditioning and strengthening exercises,
-- explore our creativity and voice,
-- get to know others and find out what we share in common,
-- challenge where we might feel shy,
-- learn how to cheer for and support each other.

2012 Have a Heart Chocolate Extravaganza

The Rotary Club of Brookline is sponsoring their 2nd Annual "Have a Heart: A Chocolate Extravaganza" on Sunday, February 12, 2012 from 12:00 noon to 3:00pm at the Brookline Holiday Inn located at 1200 Beacon Street. The themes are chocolate and hearts in celebration of Valentine's Day and the spirit of giving. The Rotary Club of Brookline will donate the majority of proceeds from the event to the Brookline Emergency Food Pantry and to other hunger-related charities.

Sixteen vendors will be showcasing their best chocolate food and drink "tastes" for sampling. There will also be music and other beverages available throughout the event, and a Silent Auction with some fabulous prizes.

Buy your tickets now! LAST YEAR WE SOLD OUT 2 DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT. We are encouraging advance ticket sales so that we can provide an accurate head count to our vendors. ABOUT THE BROOKLINE EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRY:

St. Paul's Church hosts the Brookline Emergency Food Pantry. Food and money are donated by Brookline communities of faith and organizations such as the Rotary Club, the Coolidge Corner Merchants Association, and the letter carriers. Needed items include cereal, pasta sauce, soups, canned meats, tuna fish, canned vegetables and fruit, and toiletries. Funds to purchase these items are always welcome. Volunteers are always needed.

The pantry is open 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. every week.

The number of visits to the pantry by individuals and families in need of supplementary free food continues to increase-from under 1000 in '02 to over 2000 in '05 to almost 2700 during this past year. Bring a friend or bring a group of friends! Designed as an engaging Friday night social activity, this class will focus on trying something new and having fun. We're located right outside Coolidge Corner in Brookline. Parking is easy and so is the MBTA. Grab dinner and make it a date night!

There will be a "flavor of the day" song, exercise, or drill. You won't be lost if it's your first time or if you missed a bunch of classes, and the emphasis will be on recreation and play. This is also a teaser class to inspire people to learn more. Bring a water bottle and comfy clothes. Shoes are not allowed in the studio.

Facing danger at every turn, the courageous prince must battle his way out of the underground prison to save his princess from a tragic fate.

The soundtrack features professional actors set to the background of classical music from favorite composers, as well as traditional Middle Eastern music. The program is presented with the marionettists in full view, so that the audience can witness firsthand the mechanics of puppet manipulation.

Replete with clever stage illusions and lighting effects, "An Arabian Adventure" is an action-packed drama that is sure to delight audiences of all ages while introducing them to the magical world of puppet theater.

There will be a "flavor of the day" song, exercise, or drill. You won't be lost if it's your first time or if you missed a bunch of classes, and the emphasis will be on recreation and play. This is also a teaser class to inspire people to learn more. Bring a water bottle and comfy clothes. Shoes are not allowed in the studio.

Adult Puppetry Class: Introduction to Shadow Puppetry

In 'Introduction to Shadow Puppetry,' students will learn the history of shadow performance and see examples of the exciting work being developed by today's shadow puppeteers.

Through building and performance assignments, the class will explore diverse styles of shadow puppets ranging from simple hand shadows to elaborate cut-out figures with moving parts. By the end of the class, students will have acquired all the tools they need to create their own shadow puppet show!

A Sephardic Journey

Featuring contemporary musicians from across the Middle East, Aljashu & Friends performs songs that traveled with the Spanish-Jewish conversos to the Caribbean and the Americas. The performance spans 500 years of traditional songs sung in Ladino (Judeo-Español) that can be heard from Argentina and Aruba to Venezuela and the Virgin Islands. Led by singer Julia Madeson, the group features Moroccan-born vocalist and Qanun performer, Ali Amr. He has been honored as the best Arabic music performer of the year. Ali dazzles his audience as he smoothly leaps from traditional Arabic sounds to jazz and other contemporary styles.
